Alumni Spotlight - Nick Dumas (Aviation)

I graduated from CCBC in 2004.  I chose CCBC's ATC Program because of its elite reputation.  Also, when I graduated, I would earn my CTO and NWS Weather Certificate.  In 2003, CCBC was the only school that could do that.

CCBC played a major role in preparing me for a career in aviation by providing both the technical foundation and the professional discipline I still rely on today.  The Air Traffic Control program challenged students to think critically, communicate clearly, and perform effectively in high-pressure environments where safety and precision are essential.

Through coursework in air traffic control, approach control, aviation weather, facility ratings, and aviation operations, I developed a strong understanding of the National Airspace System and the importance of coordination between pilots, controllers, airport operators, and regulatory agencies.  The program’s emphasis on real-world operational scenarios helped prepare me for positions at the FAA and Philadelphia International Airport, and ultimately for airport executive leadership roles.

One of the biggest lessons I took from CCBC was the importance of professionalism, teamwork, and adaptability.  Aviation is an industry where conditions can change rapidly, and CCBC taught me how to remain calm, make informed decisions, and communicate effectively under pressure.  Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career, whether responding to emergencies, managing airport operations, coordinating with stakeholders, or leading teams.

CCBC also exposed me to the operational side of aviation beyond the classroom.  My experience working at the Beaver County Airport Terminal while attending CCBC gave me early insight into airport administration, which later helped shape my interest in airport management and leadership.

Looking back, CCBC gave me far more than technical knowledge.  It provided the confidence, discipline, and operational mindset necessary to build a successful career in aviation and public service.
